Amish children only go to school through the 8th grade.  All the grades attend together in a one-room schoolhouse like this one.

Notice the scooters out front.  It's very common to see both Amish children and adults riding scooters as a means of transportation.

Old Order Amish are forbidden to own cars and they travel in horse-drawn buggies.

While they can't own a car, they are permitted to accept rides from Englischers - the term for non-Amish fol
ks.

The Amish do not use electricity, as it is a connection to the outside world.  Most families have a gas range, but a few still use wood-burning stoves to cook, heat food, and for warmth.

This stove burns coal and the owner mostly uses it to keep food warm on top and to heat the farmhouse.

The day begins around 4:30 a.m. in an Amish household, with everyone turning in for the night around 8:30 p.m.

It's considered disrespectful to take posed photographs of the Amish.  Based on a biblical reference, they do not take pictures or pose for pictures.
However, this commercial buggy driver was an exception.

An Amish man does not shave his beard after he is married.  Mustaches are forbidden.  And Amish women never cut their hair.

  • Amish boys and girls begin their search for a spouse when they turn 16 - during their rumschpringe;
  • There are no phones in the houses, but some families have phones in the barn;
  • The buggies have lights and signaling devices;
  • Old Order church services are held every other Sunday at home.  Families take turns hosting the service;
  • The Ordnung is the written and unwritten rules of the Amish, the understood behavior by which the Amish are expected to live.  It is passed down from generation to generation.  Most Amish know the rules by heart.
